The Integrated Arts - session 2

Miss. M was back today, teaching us more about how to build containers using different materials.  First, we traced cut outs of different shapes on to paper.  Then we cut them out, and folded or rolled the paper to make a 3D container.  We picked our favourite shape, and chose 1 or 2 different materials to cover the container.  We have some future designers in Room 16!  There were some very creative designs!  We can't wait until our last session on Wednesday.

Creating Texture With Paint

Our creative minds were hard at work this week!  We have been reading a lot of books from the author Eric Carle.  We decided that we would like to make pictures just like him!  So, our first step was to create different types of texture with paint.  We used flowers, sea sponges, cleaning sponges, combs, mini brooms and paint brushes.  We explored different ways to apply the paint to the paper by brushing, twisting, blotting, and combing.  This is part one of our art project.  We can't wait to show you the finished product!

The Integrated Arts

This week, we were very lucky to work with Miss. M, who is an interior designer.  She was teaching us how to make different containers from different materials.  In our first session of 3, Miss. M showed us a bunch of pictures of different containers and we discussed what kind of material (metal, wood, cork, twine, paper, etc.) each container was made out of.  Then we made our own sketch book.  In our book, we drew pictures of containers we liked.  In the next 2 sessions, we will be designing and creating our own container.  We are very excited to have Miss. M back next week.

Christmas Concert Practices

This week, and over the next week and a half, the grade 1's will be working hard on their songs for the Christmas concert!  Ms. Remple has been hard at work, and these dancing bears are sure to look fabulous!  A special thank you to our parent volunteers who helped out with our costumes!!

Absorb or Repel?

We were very excited today to participate in a science experiment.  We got to test different fabrics to see which we would use to make a rain jacket.  We learned that even though you can make a jacket out of almost anything, you need to decide what material would work the best, for what you wanted the jacket to do i.e. keep the water out.

More Math Games!

Today we learned another new math game!  Our goal was to add 2 numbers together, use the strategies counting on or counting back to build a tower, and spin the spinner (more and less) to see who got a point!  We had a lot of fun, and practiced our counting skills too!

Proud of our portfolios!

We are so excited to share what we have learned with our families!  We have worked hard and are ready to "show what we know."  Today we spent some time sharing our portfolios with our friends, in order to prepare for sharing with our families.  We try to do our best every day, and it's our time to shine!

The 6 Magic Story Words

Look who stopped in today!  The Magic Story Fairy made a stop in room 16 today, surprising the children with a lesson all about the 6 Magic Story Words!  The Magic Story Words: who, what, where when, why and how, are all words that good writers think about when writing.  They help the writer to think about the details they should be adding to their writing, so that he/she can paint a picture in the readers mind.

Animal environments

Our creative minds were working overtime this week - and boy did it pay off!  We can't wait to share our fabulous animal environments with our parents on conference night!  Here is a sneak peak . . .

Colour mixing

We had a lot of fun this week in art!  We learned about different types of lines: straight, curvy, zig zag, wavy lines, etc.  We then learned how to hold a paint brush and how to mix colours.   We can't wait to share our masterpieces!  They are already up on display and we have received many compliments from other teachers and students.
