W.I.T.S

We are so lucky that Mrs. Lowe came to talk to us about using our W.I.T.S. to help us solve problems.

W - walk away
I - Ignore
T - Talk it out
S - Seek help

We have been practicing using W.I.T.S at recess and in our classroom.  We are getting really good at it! Room 16 decided to make a comic to teach others how to use their W.I.T.S.  We used Comic Life on our iPads to choose one of the W.I.T.S.  Here are some of Room 16's awesome creations!!

Digging for Dinosaur Fossils

Today we were palentologists! We used hammers, picks, and paint brushes to discover dinosaur fossils. We learnt that we have to be very careful and take our time. Once we clean our fossil off we documented it by drawing a picture and writing the name of the dinosaur. We had a GREAT time!

Dinosaur Tracks

Some dinosaurs went through our school and left some footprints. Students wanted to find the biggest print by using straws, meter sticks, paper clips and cubes to measure length.  What dinosaur do you think had the biggest footprint?

The Counting Game

SKIP COUNTING IS FUN!

Students have been learning how to skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's. We have been singing songs and practicing using the app, "The Counting Game" where kids can skip count in a fun way.  It is free and a really good learning tool for school or home.

Tillie and the Wall

This week we read Tillie and the Wall about a mouse who wonders what is on the other side of the wall. We used our imaginations to write what each of us thought was on the other side. We then created artwork to go with our writing. Here is some of the artwork we did!!

THE 5 SENSES: Taste test!!!

Room 16 has been working hard at learning their 5 senses. And we saved the best for last...TASTE! We explored different foods that were either sweet, sour, salty or bitter. Happy 100th Day of School!

For the 100th Day of School, the grade 1's had a number of stations and challenges to take part in.  Challenge number 1 - create a picture with 100 pattern blocks!  Children could choose to cooperate and work with a partner or work by themselves.

Challenge #2 - Count out 100 pieces of Lego and create a structure/building/object.

Station #3 - Make a necklace with 100 fruit loops!  Students had to create their necklace using groups of 10.  Students learned that  there are 10 groups of 10 in 100!

Station #4: 100 Piece puzzels.

Station #5: Mystery Math!  Colour the 100 chart according to the code to revel the mystery message!

Mrs. Hardy also challenged the students to dress up like they were 100 years old!  The kids looked fabulous! Thank you for participating!

We also used the app, "Oldster" to look into the future and see what we each would look like when we are 100 years old . . .
