Today we had our very first popcorn and movie party!  When we do our job, listen, and work together as a team, we earn fuzzies!  When we get to 10, we get to have a party!  We can't wait to do this again!  Congratulations room 16!

We also watched another video that had a special message . . . never give up!  Try, try, again!

Today we watched the music video "What I am," by Will I Am and the Sesame Street characters.  We wrote about who we are as individuals, and how we believe in ourselves!

Today we learned how to play "Go Fish."  We played with a deck of cards.  But, we didn't use the whole deck.  You don't need the face cards.  You can play with 2 or more people.  First, you shuffle the cards.  Next, you deal each player 7 cards.  Then you organize your cards in your hand.  Next, you look to see if you have any pairs.  If you have a pair (2 of the same number), you put the pair on the ground or table.  The player who handed out the cards goes first.  They ask another player for a number card that would match one of the cards in their hand. If the other person has it, they give it up.  But, if they don't, they say, "Go Fish!"  Then the player who asked the question, picks the top card up off of the pile.  We would LOVE to teach our families how to play!!

We have worked hard on our writing over the past 3 days!  We learned how to add details and make our writing interesting!  We had to write about what we like to play, who we like to play with, and where we like to play.  Who, what, and where are all magic story words.  We hope you enjoy our wonderful words!

Today we were building different numbers.  We learned that there are different ways to build a number! The number 5 can be seen as 2 and 3.

It can also be seen as 4 and 1.

5 can be 2 and 2 and 1.

This looks like the dots on a dice!

5 is also 3 and 2!  Look at all of the smart cookies we have in our class!

Today it was Sleepy Head Monday in Room 16!  We decided that we all need to go to bed a little earlier tonight, so we are ready to have a great day at school tomorrow!

This is our class learning the actions to our number 2 poem! It goes like this:  Over the hill, and down the track.  Then the train goes all the way back.  Two!  Two!  Two!

Today we drew a self-portrait.  A self-portait is a picture of ourselves.  We learned how to add details into our drawings.  When we draw people, we need a shirt, pants, socks, shoes, hands, eyes, a nose, mouth, ears, glasses and hair.  We even learned how to draw our necks!  Everyone tried their best and did a fantastic job!!!

Stevenson School Library has had the good fortune of being adopted by Chapters Polo Festival for the 2013 Adopt a School campaign. It will run in-store from September 15 to October 5. We are looking for your help of meeting our goal of raising money for 257 books, or one new book for every student in the school. 

Today we learned how to pick "good fit books".  When we pick books, we should choose books that we are interested in, books that we will understand, and books that we can have fun reading or ones we can learn from.  We learned about the 5 finger rule: if we can read 5 or more words on a page, then it's a good fit book.  If we can't, then that book is not a good fit right now.  We LOVE reading books because, it's fun and we can get smarter and smarter!

We had an assembly for the first time in grade 1.  We welcomed the new students and watched our music video for our school song.

We LOVE writing!  It is really fun! We learned about CSP (capitals, spaces, and periods).  We also learned how to write new words!

On our first day of grade 1, we made a promise tree.  We love our promise tree, because it reminds us of what we are going to try to do every day.  It will help us learn to be the best we can be!

Welcome to Room 16!

Welcome to Grade 1!  Summer is almost over and another fun filled year of learning is about to begin!  I am looking forward to meeting everyone over the next few days. The first day of school is Friday September 6, 2013.
