We were very lucky to have Leanna Kelher join our class for 3 sessions. Students learned about the 7 teachings through storytelling, acting and play.

Bat research
We have completed our research on bats! We are going to be starting our own research projects on a Manitoba animal this week!
Problem solving
Today we had to "show what we know" about problem solving. We know that we always read a problem 3 times:
1) We read the problem to find out what it is about.
2) We read it again to look for important information.
3) We read it a third time to think about: what is the problem asking me to find out?
We also know how important it is to show our thinking and a clear and organized way. We add a sentence at the end that says what our answer is. We have explored the strategies: draw a picture, act it out, make a table, and to use an array.... and there is more learning to come!
Counting seeds
Today we opened up our pumpkins and sorted the goop and seeds. We then needed an organized way to found the seeds, so once again we used ten frames. We then compared our results to see which pumpkin had the most, least, and if any had the same amount.
Area-the space an object takes up
So far during our pumpkin math exploration we have learned about estimation (an estimate is a thinking guess), height, and weight. Today we are measuring the "foot print" of our pumpkin (otherwise known as the area). First we made an estimate. Then, we traced our pumpkin's foot print, and we covered it with blocks. We needed an organized way to count the blocks, so we used 10 frames and counted by 10's! After we had some fun building towers! 😊
Patterns all around!
We have been learning about patterns! We learned that patterns are all around us and they always repeat themselves (core). We learned how to create, extend and label 2 and 3 part patterns.

A leaf can be . . .
Once again today we used leaves to expand our learning. Today we created these leaf pictures. We mixed up a little bit of math, science and art and came out with these!
Does it look right, sound right, does it make sense?
Every day, from the very first day of grade 1, we have been learning about a letter of the alphabet. We learn how to print each letter, we brainstorm words that begin with that letter, we listen and print where we hear the letter in a word (at the beginning or at the end), we learn how to stretch the sounds in words (c-a-t, f-a-s-t), and learn how to check our printing/spelling to see if it looks right, sounds right, and makes sense. We can't wait to be expert readers, writers, and spellers!
Fall Leaves in Fall Colours
We have been learning about all of the changes we see in the Fall. The children are fascinated with all of the beautiful colours of the leaves at this time of year. To create this project, we used black glue and watercolour paints. The student had to first trace leaves. Then, outline the leaves using the black glue. This made the colours pop off the page. We examined leaves and discussed the colours leaves are in the fall. We then filled in our leaves using water colour paint. The children did a wonderful job and were super proud of themselves!

Learning Math through playing games
This week we will be learning a series of math games in preparation for math stations next week. Our math games all help us work on the following skills: number recognition, subitizing, counting on, more and less, even and odd, and 1-1 matching. Who knew math could be do fun? The very best thing about these games, is that they all can be played at home! Make sure to ask your child how to play!

Family Trees
We have been talking a lot about our families and asking questions like: who are the people in your family? Who are your relatives? We created family trees today, and as you can see every family looks a little bit the same and a little different!

Alphabet, printing and letter sounds.
Right from the first day of grade 1, we have been learning 1 letter a day. We learn each letter's name, sound, words that begin with that letter, how to print it, and we listen to/record where we can hear that sound in words (at the beginning or the end). The Story Bots help us brainstorm all kinds of interesting words!
I like myself!
Today we started to learn all about ourselves. We read a story called, "I like myself" by Karen Beaumont. We then watched this video:
We then got to thinking and asked the question, "what kind of smart am I?"
We then learned about multiple intelligences and how people learn.

Guess what I like best?
We read a story called, "Guess what I like best?" We decided we wanted to write our own version. After, we finished we got to show and share with our friends! Boy, were we ever proud!

We are all writers!
We have been working hard on our writing, because we have important words to say! Here's a sneak peak of our hard work!
